Calligraphy and lettering design are related but different. Calligraphy is done directly with brushes, pens and other tools. Calligraphy comes from gesture and movement, and often is more spontaneous than hand lettering, although it can also be very refined. When I do calligraphy for reproduction it often starts freely, and I work very fast. In the design process the work becomes more intentional and one word may go through hours of careful editing and revision. These portfolios showcase contemporary calligraphy, historical styles, and Asian-influenced brushwork.
